New City offers classes on a quarterly basis which also vary in subject matter. One course New City offers is called Starting Points. Another is called How to Read the Bible or “Hermeneutics 101”. We also offer a Baptism Class once a quarter to prepare baptismal candidates for baptism.
Starting Points is a seminar exploring three basic questions about the Christian faith: 1. Who is Jesus? 2. Why did he die? 3. How can I trust the Bible? Each question is explored in its own session, making the seminar three sessions. Each session is hosted in the church offices on a Sunday following second service (1:30PM).
How to Read the Bible (or “Hermeneutics 101”)
How to Read the Bible (or “Hermeneutics 101”) is a seminar on the art and science of biblical interpretation. The seminar is offered in three sessions.
- Session one is entitled “The Bible is Alien to Us.” In this session, the historical and cultural context of the Bible (the ancient Near East) is explored, along with literary elements of Scripture like genre, idiom, metaphor, and myth.
- Session two is entitled “We Read the Bible Through Lenses.” In this session, the social location of the Bible’s readers is explored: our own historical, cultural contexts.
- Session three is entitled “The Bible is a Story that Points to Jesus + Love.” In this session, the Bible is explored as one, unified Story with the revelation of God in Jesus Christ as the climax and the point of it all.
