Lent is a forty-day season of the Christian calendar during which Christians dating back to the early church to today reflect on the passion (i.e. suffering and death) of Christ. This contemplative season offers Jesus-disciples an opportunity to repent, fast, and pray.

This Lenten season, New City Church is encouraging Jesus-disciples to join us while we embark upon “The Journey to the Cross.

In addition to participation in worship gatherings like the weekly Sunday gathering, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday gatherings, New City is offering a Lenten Guide. This guide includes reflections on The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James Cone, as well as Scripture readings for each day of Lent, Lenten prayers, and suggestions for fasting and giving.

You can also download a “Scrollable” PDF Version you can read off a smart phone or tablet.

“We invite you, therefore, in the name of Jesus, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before the Lord, maker and redeemer.” [1]

Ash Wednesday Service

The evening of Ash Wednesday, March 1st, New City will host a contemplative and liturgical worship gathering in the church offices (453 S. Spring Street, in the basement) at 7PM.
