The story begins in the book of Judges, where we learn that the People of God are struggling to be faithful to God. Like many of us God had a dream of being married and starting a home together with his people. Their home was called the promise land. The place of destiny. It was going to be awesome. He would be faithful to his people and he dreamed of them being faithful to him. God had longed dreamed about how this was going to go but tragically God’s dreams would be shattered. Upon moving into their new place his people began flirting with other gods and soon they were cheating on God. Eventually they all but forgot about God. He had saved them out slavery, he had led them through their desert years, he had provided a new home, and they had betrayed his trust. Well soon God’s people discovered that their new allegiance was actually a horrible mistake. They became slaves again, oppressed people again, and in their desperation they call out to God. Again and again God would answer. He would send someone to their rescue and again begin to dream how they might live together. This cyclical pattern is essentially the book of Judges. Each Judge highlighted in the book is a new person sent by God to save his people from their ties to other gods having realized that these other gods were in the end oppressive and destructive.
