The Power of Cross-shaped Love

Preacher:
Passage: John 13:1-17

On the night Jesus was betrayed, he demonstrated the full extent of his love by washing the feet of all the disciples—including Judas, his betrayer. In this humble act, Jesus demonstrates the power of self-sacrificial (or “cross-shaped”) love and teaches us how to fight a spiritual battle against Satan. We disarm and humiliate the powers, including Satan, through: 1) Servanthood; and 2) Mercy. Servanthood and Mercy expose and dispel the lie that power is gained by domination, coercion, and violence. True power, Jesus shows us, is gained through cross-shaped love. But we can’t fight Satan in our own strength. The weapons of our warfare have divine power. Jesus tells Peter that unless he washes him, Peter can have no part with him. Unless we are washed, cleansed of sin, and given a New Identity in Christ, we can never hope to defeat Satan in our lives. We can only gain a new identity in Christ by God’s grace, and it’s God’s gracious gift of a new identity in Christ that powers our servanthood and mercy.
