The Radical Samaritan

Preacher:
Passage: Luke 10:25-37

An expert in the law tested Jesus by asking: what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus turned the question back to him. The man answered: love God with everything and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus affirmed his answer. The expert in the law then wanted to justify himself and asked, who is my neighbor? In response, Jesus told a parable where a Samaritan, a member of a racial group hated by the Jews and considered a sworn enemy, is the hero who selflessly helps a man beaten up by robbers and left for dead. This story has two big ideas: (1) real love is radically sacrificial and inclusive; and (2) only when we know we are sinners saved by grace can we really love like the Samaritan.
