Unveiling Faithfulness & Opposition

Preacher:
Passage: Revelation 2:8-17

In the letters to the churches of Smyrna and Pergamum, the Risen Christ in the Spirit are unveiling (revealing) reality to the early disciples—both the sources of their opposition and what makes for faithful witness. Not only was their opposition political and religious, but it was also fueled by the Accuser (ha-satan). And not only did faithfulness look like testifying to the truth before political and religious tribunals, it also entailed abstaining from participation in the idol banquets which were part of the fabric of Roman social life. But, the Satan infiltrated the Pergamene church with the doctrines of the Balaamite-Nicalaitans which justified participation in these practices. They denied the spiritual dimension of life. But the practices in which we participate form the desires of our hearts and minds. So, Jesus promises to supply faithful disciples with the antidote to their malformed desires, his own divine life (hidden manna) and an intimate relationship of love (a white stone with a secret name).
