Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Course
Spring 2022
You are invited to participate in a deeply transformative discipleship course called Emotionally Healthy Spirituality on Sundays from March 27th to May 22, 2022 (with Easter Sunday off)! We are piloting this course with the goal of making it a central offering in New City Church’s spiritual formation plan. It’s exciting to offer this course as a concrete answer to the question, “How do I grow as a Christian in this church?”

What is Emotionally Healthy Spirituality and why should I join?
Have you ever felt the desire to grow deeper in your faith, but felt lost about how to sustain fruitful spiritual transformation? The Emotionally Healthy Spirituality course is an 8-week course designed to help us move forward in a discipleship that deeply changes our lives.
The EHS course will help us dig beneath the surface in our relationship with God. It will help us develop rhythms to deepen our life with God, and the tools and concepts to sustain that life. During the course, we will see how it is not possible to be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature; how knowing God and knowing ourselves cannot be separated; how those times when it feels like our faith is not working anymore are actually times of our greatest growth.
This course isn’t just about being a “good Christian;” this is about learning to live the abundant life in a spiritually authentic, truly human way – bathed in God’s grace, centered on Jesus.
Emotionally Healthy Spirituality is part 1 of a 2-part course called Emotionally Healthy Discipleship. We will be launching the second part of the discipleship course, called Emotionally Healthy Relationships, in the Fall of 2022.
What is the schedule?
Each session will be held in-person in the church office at 1:30pm (unless otherwise indicated). However, there will be a dedicated Zoom group for those that feel unwilling to join in-person gatherings yet (the group will be capped at 10 participants). What are the sessions like?
Before each group meeting, read the chapters from the Emotionally Healthy Spirituality book that correspond with each session in the workbook. Another core element of the EH Spirituality Course is to prayerfully read the devotionals found in Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day during the week that follows the study.
Each session is divided into six sections:
- Introduction
- Growing Connected
- Video: Opening Presentation
- Group Discussion
- Application
- Video: Closing Summary
Pastor Danny will facilitate the large group portions of the course at the beginning of each session. Participants will be in small groups facilitated by trained table leaders for the remainder of the session. The discussion comes from the Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Workbook and is based on the weekly readings in the book Emotionally Healthy Spirituality. Throughout the week, we will be making daily use of the devotional book to practice and deepen what we are learning. Yes, there is some homework!
What if I can’t make it every session?
If you would like to participate in the EHS course, we ask that you try to prioritize participation, to the best of your ability. If you aren’t able to attend a session, please keep up with the book and devotional and come prepared for the following session.
Will there be childcare?
