Freed to Love

Preacher:
Passage: Acts 15

As more and more Gentiles became Christians, a major dispute broke out between certain law-oriented Jews, on the one hand, and Paul and Barnabas, on the other hand, regarding whether Gentile believers had to follow the laws f the Old Testament. So, the Apostles in Jerusalem held a meeting (which we refer to as the Council of Jerusalem) and decided that Gentiles should not be subject to the Old Testament laws. At the heart, this decision affirmed the gospel that we are not saved by law but by grace through faith in Jesus. What does this mean to us? It means that our salvation, approval, validation, and worth come from grace through faith in what Jesus has done for us, not works, through the law, in other words, through self-improvement of self-salvation projects. It is only when our hearts are awakened by God's love and grace that we stop focusing on ourselves and focus on God's glory and love for others; and so, we are finally freed to love.
