God’s Plan for Work

Passage: Genesis 1:28, 2:1-3, 15

Some of us think of work as a drag, but we work to live. Some of us are consumed by work, and we live to work. Some of us think that our work has no real significance in our spiritual life other than as a context to share the gospel. What is God’s view of our work? Genesis 1-2 teaches us that (1) work is not a curse because work begin even before sin entered humanity; God designed us to work because work is good; (2) there is dignity in all work; (3) God calls us to join his work of creating and cultivating. That’s what he meant when he called us to care for his creation and fill the earth and subdue it. It is a call to continue in the work he is doing. In addition, the implication of the gospel that Jesus is coming back to restore and renew everything and establish the new heavens and new earth points to the importance of the physical world. Therefore, our work matters. We are called to continue the work of God through creating and cultivating for the common good.
