Discerning God’s Call to Vocation

Passage: Ephesians 4:28

We often hear that God has a plan for our lives; but, how do we figure out what it is? Kevin shared some ways to discern God’s call to vocation. First, go to the Scripture. It tells us God’s general will—that we make disciples, and that we seek the common good, love our neighbors, serve the city, and seek human flourishing. Don’t get stuck trying too hard to figure out exactly what God’s specific vocational will for your life might be; rather, focus on how you can promote His general will through your work. Second, listen to the Holy Spirit. The Spirit guides us, speaks to us, and compels us. He often speaks to us as we pray. Sometimes, he guides us through prophetic words. Third, seek the wisdom of the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit. The Scriptures do not tell us about our individual vocation, and if even we received a prophetic word regarding a specific vocation, we need to test it. How? Through the wisdom of the Spirit by looking at our (1) affinity; (2) ability; and (3) opportunity. What if we messed up? God’s still in control. He can even use the mess we made to do something beautiful through his touch.
