How Jesus Taught Us to Read the Bible
In this passage, Jesus directly and indirectly taught us three things about how to read the Bible. First, he taught us to read the Bible as the authoritative word of God. Unless we accept it as so, we cannot have a real relationship with God. We will end up turning God into an image of what we believe, not submitting to the God who reveals himself to us.
Second, he taught us to read the Bible as primarily about Christ, not about us. We are not called to read the Old Testament stories moralistically. We are called to put them in the context of the big story of salvation and see what they reveal about Jesus and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Third, he taught us to read the Bible to have a relationship with him. The point of the Bible is not the book, but the person it points to. Unless we are having an intimate love relationship with God through the Bible, we are missing the point.
