In Bed with Babylon, Part 2: Convicted Grace
In Revelation 18, John of Patmos, inspired by the Holy Spirit, prophetically condemns the exploitative economic practices of Rome (symbolized by “Babylon”—the imperial domination system). John and the Spirit call first-century Christians to remain faithful to Jesus, the Lamb, by resisting the temptation to share in Babylon’s alluring luxuries and pleasures that will lead to its downfall. This passage calls twenty-first century Christians to question our participation in economic systems that exploit God’s creation and oppress divine image-bearing humans. In our engagement with our surrounded cultures, we’re called to a posture of “convicted grace”—one that refuses unfaithfulness to God while recognizing the grace required to navigate the messiness of everyday modern life.
